Permanent Orienteering Course Open at People’s Park

Published: November 21, 2018

WSP in association with Waterford Orienteers recently completed the installation of the Permanent Orienteering Course in the People’s Park, Waterford. Funded by Dormant Accounts through Sport Ireland.

There are three different courses available in Peoples Park, including a ‘Wheelo course’. This ensures that the course is accessible to all and fun for all the family.

Orienteering is an inclusive sport where you need to find your way from one point to another using only a map and your brain. Each course consists of a series of checkpoints that are mapped out and must be found in the correct order. The aim is to complete the course as quickly as possible!

The ‘real life’ problem solving skills experienced in orienteering can help improve participants navigation, communication and social skills.

Thank you to Waterford City and County Council for use of their land and also their staff who helped to install the course. Now let the fun begin!

The orienteering course is open to all – families, individuals, clubs, uniformed groups and schools.

To tackle your chosen distance:
1. Download the map for your chosen distance (as well as the answer sheet for checking at the end);
2. Find the controls in the order shown on the map;
3. Complete the numbered code of the marker post in the corresponding box;
4. At the end of the Course, check your answers are correct
(by referring to the answer sheet);
5. Good luck and enjoy!

A Simple Guide to Orienteering

Published: November 21, 2018

A standard orienteering course consists of a start, a series of control sites that are connected by lines and numbered in the order they are to be visited, and a finish.

Participants will be given a map with the control sites clearly circled and must find these in the correct sequence. Each control site will be marked by a brightly colored flag or a plaque. Participants have to punch their card or collect a code to prove that they have visited this control site. It is important that participants keep their maps correctly orientated at all stage and align it with the features around them.  The aim is to complete the course as quickly as possible. This is something that can be completed in a team or individually.

Our permanent courses and downloadable maps are very easy to use and are suitable for everybody. There is are also ‘Wheelo’ courses  in Kilbarry Nature Park and the People’s Park in Waterford City. It is also very simple to create your own course.

Please note you can take a loan of kites, punches and control cards from our office at the Regional Sports Centre in Waterford. However, before you begin, please ensure that participants are aware of how to orientate and align the map. All you need to do is turn the map until what is in front of you in the terrain is in front of you on the map.

If you wish to use one of our permanent courses:

  1. Download the map from the website.
  2. Find the control sites in the correct order and complete the codes at the side of the map to demonstrate that you have fully completed the course.
  3. This can be completed as a timed event if you so wish.

If you wish to create your own course:

  1. Download the master map of the area ALL MAPS
  2. Decide on the course and sequence of control points. You can then draw this map in, using a pen and a ruler. Place a circle around the checkpoints and link the points to one another to indicate the course that is to be followed.
  3. If you have kites and punches available, these can be placed at the checkpoints. Participants can then be given a control card to punch, as they find each control site. Alternatively, if you do not have access to control cards and punches, you can place an object or you own sequence of letter/ numbers for participants to find.

Orienteering Teacher Training

Published: October 8, 2018

Fifteen teachers from twelve different primary schools around Waterford City and County took part in our Orienteering Teacher Training last Friday October 5th at WIT Arena. This training was delivered by Mick Farrell from the Irish Orienteering Association.

Even though the day was cold and wet, the teachers weren’t long warming up as they took part in many fun games and team challenges. The teachers learned numerous orienteering games which they could use to introduce their students to the sport. They also got an opportunity to partake in an orienteering course which got very competitive!

After lunch, the group learned how to create their own course on maps using the software ‘purple pen’. All participants left with a resource pack for their school which included kites, control cards and an array of games which can be played anywhere with very little equipment. Schools are also being mapped in the coming weeks, so that they can complete orienteering on-site.

Teachers were present on the day from the following schools: Passage East N.S;  Garranbane N.S; Glor Na Mara, Tramore;  Waterford Educate Together NS, Crehana N.S.; Rathgormack N.S.; Bunscoil Bhothar Na Naomh;  Scoil Mhuuire, Abbeyside; Holy Family Junior N.S.; Scoil Gharbháin; St Joseph’s Special School, Waterford.

A special word of thanks to WIT Arena for providing us with the facility and the Irish Orienteering Association for delivering such a fantastic, informative course.

Orienteering

Published: July 25, 2018

Orienteering is the sport of navigation that requires you to find your way from one point to another using only a map, your brains and sometimes a compass. It’s easy to learn and a fun way to exercise your body and mind, as you enjoy the outdoors. It’s a sport for everyone and is something that can be easily learnt by people of all ages and abilities. Orienteering is usually done in the woods, hills or parks, with the participants on foot.

Orienteering develops many skills including problem solving, team work, decision making and self awareness. It really is fun for all the family.

Waterford Sports Partnership, in association with Southeast Viking Orienteers and Orienteering Ireland are currently developing Orienteering across Waterford. We have developed permanent courses and mapped many areas in the last twelve months. Our aim is that schools, community groups, families and individuals will try out this exciting, inclusive sport. We encourage you to use these permanent courses and download the maps to create your own.

Waterford Orienteers and Waterford Sports Partnership hosted a ‘Come & Try’ Orienteering day on ‘Sunday. The sun shone brightly, as families and individuals used their maps and heads to find the different points located around Abbeyside.

It was fantastic to see 62 participants who had never attempted Orienteering before take part and complete the 2.9km route. An additional 95 participants joined to complete the tougher courses and came from all over the country including Belfast, Dublin and Cork.

This day demonstrated that Orienteering is inclusive for all ages and abilities and really is fun for the whole family.

Please contact Eadaoin on 0761 10 2199 or email eloughman@waterfordsportspartnership.ie if you wish to hear about our future orienteering events or would like to join the local Waterford Orienteering Club.
