THIS PROGRAMME IS FOR STUDENTS from 13 – 18 years old

Waterford Sports Partnership, under the direction of Sport Ireland have been successful in securing Dormant Account Funding to support the delivery of a number of Sport Leader Award programmes within schools, community groups and youth organisations.

The Sports Leadership Award provides the ideal starting point for learners who wish to develop their leadership skills and gain a nationally recognised leader qualification. This programme is designed to equip young people with the motivation and confidence to deliver sporting opportunities to others and general leadership skills that will stand to them throughout their life. This qualification is 29 hours in duration, 18 hours of directed learning and 11 hours of self study (completion of learning log and planning sessions).

This programme benefits the students in many ways:

  • It’s a fun and practical course that focuses on leader rather than technical ability.
  • Potential stepping stone into employment, further education and training.
  • Allows everybody to take a full and active role in sport and physical activity.
  • Increased self confidence that comes through taking responsibility for their own and others learning and enjoyment.

Safeguarding 3

Published: July 24, 2018

Safeguarding 3 – Designated Liaison Person (DLP) Workshop

The third part of Sport Ireland’s Child Welfare & Protection Training Programme is the Designated Liaison Person workshop. Every club/organisation should designate a person to be responsible for dealing with any concerns about the protection of children. The Designated Liaison Person is responsible for reporting allegations or suspicions of child abuse to TUSLA Child and Family Agency or Social Services (NI) and/or An Garda Siochána / PSNI. It is recommended that this person is a senior club person. However, if there is difficulty identifying a separate individual to take this role, the Club Children’s Officer can be appointed as Designated Liaison Person once the club/organisation is clear about the responsibilities of each role. The organisation’s child protection policy and procedures should include the name and contact details of the Designated Liaison Person and the responsibilities attached to the role.

A person appointed to the Designated Liaison Person position in a club must have completed the Basic Awareness Workshop in Child Welfare & Protection and should complete the NEW Designated Liaison Person 3 hour workshop. A club may appoint the same person to both the CCO and DLP positions however best practice advises that they are kept as separate roles.

Waterford Sports Partnership facilitates Safeguarding Training courses for people working with young people in sport throughout Waterford. The courses are for the benefit of everyone involved in children’s sport e.g. coaches, parents/guardians, sports leaders.

By following the principles, policy and practical guidelines contained in the Code, sports leaders are playing their part in providing an enjoyable and safe environment in which children can learn and thrive.

The course is a mix of theory and group work. On completion of the course attendees should . . .

(a) Be aware of the role and responsibilities of the Designated Liaison Person in relation to protecting and safeguarding children.
(b) Be aware of their organisation’s responsibilities in relation to keeping children safe.
(c) Have gained appropriate knowledge of the child protection system and its processes.
(d) Be able to ensure that their organisation’s policies and procedures are in-line with Children First.

All courses are 3 hours in duration. Certificates of attendance will be issued after the course.
A fee of €15 applies per person. Participants must be over 18 years of age.
