Affane/Cappoquin GAA Club Community Walkway

Published: July 14, 2020

We were delighted to assist Affane/Cappoquin GAA Club to develop their newly opened Community Walkway as part of our Rural Hub Development Project. This safe and accessible 1km walkway is a fantastic new amenity for the local community. One of the key aspects for the hub is working with community organisations and sports clubs to increase physical activity opportunities for the people of Cappoquin, Lismore and Villierstown.

This video from Affane/Cappoquin GAA Club member Maria Radley features some beautiful aerial shots of the new walkway as well as highlighting the fantastic community effort which helped to make this project a reality. Well done to all involved. We encourage local people to avail of the clubs €10 social membership offer which gives you access to this wonderful facility.

Fun Athletics at Home!

Sportshall Athletics at Home
We reacted to the COVID-19 pandemic by trying to create resources to enable people to keep active during lockdown. In conjunction with Athletics Ireland, Blackwater AC, Ferrybank AC, Finisk Valley AC. KCK Athletic Club, Waterford AC, and West Waterford AC we devised a Sportshall Athletics online programme funded by Dormant Accounts funding through Sport Ireland. 326 families registered for the programme and were sent daily ‘how to’ videos covering ten athletics disciplines including Javelin, Long Jump and Target Throw. Each video included a warm-up followed by an explanation of the daily test and how to complete them using household items. A big thanks to local athletes Kate Veale, Megan Kiely and Anna O’Connor for featuring in the videos and to the six local athletics clubs for promoting the programme to their followers. The programme was a great success and we had participants from all over Ireland and Irish people living overseas in Cyprus, France, Spain, UK and America.

National Play Day West Waterford

Published: July 6, 2020

Waterford Sports Partnership celebrated National Play Day 2020 with 100 families in West Waterford on Saturday 4th July 2020.

Under the theme this year of ‘Playful Communities, Playful Homes’, Waterford City and County Council received funding from the Department of Children and Youth Affairs to host initiatives to promote and celebrate National Play Day, by creating playful opportunities for children.

The Minister for Children, Disability, Equality and Integration, Roderic O’Gorman T.D., encouraged participation.

“Play is central to children’s wellbeing, learning and development.  Now more than ever, there is a need for each of us to make time for play in our homes and in our communities. I welcome National Play Day 2020 and encourage people to take part, whether it is from your home or in your community.

As part of National Play Day 2020, Waterford Sports Partnership coordinated the assembly & distribution of 200 play packs for families across Waterford. The packs contained lots of equipment including a skipping rope, ball, frisbee, chalk and bubbles. 100 of these play packs were distributed to families in West Waterford with collection from Lismore Heritage Centre and Cappoquin/Affane GAA Club. In total, 266 children benefited from the play packs which was accompanied by a video from Waterford Sports Partnership staff on how to use your play pack which you can view here . . .

Cappoquin, Lismore & Villierstown HAVE YOUR SAY!

Published: July 6, 2020

Waterford Sports Partnership secured Dormant Accounts funding to develop a physical activity hub in the three areas of Cappoquin, Lismore and Villierstown in West Waterford.

The core objective of the Community Sports Hub is to grow participation, engage the local community, promote community leadership, offer a range of sporting opportunities, promote awareness of sporting opportunities and bring all key partners/groups/people together within the three specified areas.

A key component of this process is to ensure we engage effectively with the 2,253 people living within the three areas. For the project to be a success, Waterford Sports Partnership will be engaging with local clubs/organisations and individual to ensure that together we achieve the following:

  • Provide pathways for Sport and Physical Activity
  • Produce well trained people to develop the capacity of sport on a local level
  • Create strong organisations
  • Provide quality facilities

We have already increased physical activity numbers through our work in partnership with Cappoquin Rowing Club, the seven local primary schools, our club/school Sportshall Athletics programme and our assistance with clubs and community organisations providing opportunities for the entire community. We also coordinated opportunities for Men’s Health Week and National Play Day within the locality. However, now is the chance for all residents to have their say to ensure that their voice is heard and we, together, can make a positive impact on the opportunities available within this area.

We have launched an online survey which can be accessed HERE. We encourage all residents of Cappoquin, Lismore and Villerstown to complete the survey and to encourage other individuals and groups in their locality to have their say too.

Men’s Health Week 2020 | West Waterford

Published: July 3, 2020

International Men’s Health Week ran from Monday 15th to Sunday 21st June and is celebrated in many European countries. The theme of 2020 is “Restoring the Balance: Be Part of the Solution”.

Celebrated internationally, the overall aims of MHW are to:

• Heighten awareness of preventable health problems for males of all ages.
• Support men & boys to engage in healthier lifestyle choices / activities.
• Encourage early detection & treatment of health difficulties in males.

Waterford Sports Partnership coordinated four events during the week with two of them specifically available for people within the West Waterford triangle.

On Monday 15th June our online Fighting Fit Programme commenced and we were delighted with buy in from men in West Waterford. This six week programme gives participants a weekly 30 minute video delivered by Irish national coach Killian Walsh from Dungarvan Boxing Club. Sessions include warm up, skipping tuition, progressive boxing techniques, shadow boxing and core strength.

We also delivered socially distanced Men on the Move sessions in three locations and on Wednesday 17th June we worked in conjunction with Cappoquin Railway AFC. WSP tutor Shauna Walsh delivered three thirty minute sessions to a total of 17 men in groups of no more than 6 with the sessions covering warm-up, aerobic exercises, core strength & cool down.

Well done to all the men that took part and thank you to Cappoquin Railway AFC. We were delighted with the buy-in from the men of West Waterford as we aimed to ‘restore the balance’ for Irish men.

Here are a few highlights of the week, keep an eye out for some follow on activities.
