IMPORTANT Child Welfare & Protection Training Information for ALL Clubs

Published: January 27, 2015

The Irish Sports Council has recently changed the structure of Child Welfare & Protection (Code of Ethics) Training Programme for Clubs. The details of the three stages of training are outlined here as follows:
1. Safeguarding 1 – Basic Awareness Workshop in Child Welfare & Protection  – a must for anyone working with children!

All Coaches, Club Children’s Officers and Designated Liaison Persons must first complete the 3 hour Child Welfare & Protection Basic Awareness Course.  This course educates participants on the implementation of best practice in protecting the welfare of children involved in sport.

The old six hour Children’s Officer Training Course has been replaced by two separate three hour courses.

2. Safeguarding 2 – Club Children’s Officer (CCO) Workshop – a must for all Club Children’s Officers

A Club Children’s Officer should be child centered in focus and have as the primary aim the establishment of a child centered ethos within the club. S/he is the link between the children and the adults in the club.  S/he also takes responsibility for monitoring and reporting to the Club Management Committee on how club policy impacts on young people and Sports Leaders

A person appointed to the Club Children’s Officer position in a club must have completed the Child Welfare & Protection Basic Awareness workshop and should complete the NEW Club Children’s Officer 3 hour Training Course. This course will help the Club Children’s Officer to carry out the function of their role in the club and support the implementation of best practice in the club. Participants will also receive a Club Children’s Officer Action Planning document as part of the training.

3. Safeguarding 3 – Designated Liaison Person (DLP) Workshop
The third part of the ISC Child Welfare & Protection Training Programme is the Designated Liaison Person workshop. This workshop is currently under review and will be available to clubs in the Spring /Summer of 2015.

Every club/organisation should designate a person to be responsible for dealing with any concerns about the protection of children. The Designated Liaison Person is responsible for reporting allegations or suspicions of child abuse to TUSLA Child and Family Agency or Social Services (NI) and/or An Garda Siochána / PSNI. It is recommended that this person is a senior club person. However, if there is difficulty identifying a separate individual to take this role, the Club Children’s Officer can be appointed as Designated Liaison Person once the club/organisation is clear about the responsibilities of each role.  The organisation’s child protection policy and procedures should include the name and contact details of the Designated Liaison Person and the responsibilities attached to the role.

A person appointed to the Designated Liaison Person position in a club must have completed the Basic Awareness Workshop in Child Welfare & Protection and should complete the NEW Designated Liaison Person 3 hour workshop. A club may appoint the same person to both the CCO and DLP positions however best practice advises that they are kept as separate roles.

Pumped Schools’ Video Awards Focusing on Heart Health

Published: November 6, 2014

Come on Waterford teenagers!  Let’s get involved in the Pumped Schools’ Video Awards, a great opportunity to create a mini-movie and perhaps win 3,000 euro for your school in the process. Waterford Sports Partnership encourages Waterford schools and students to get involved against a backdrop of 274 people dying from cardiovascular disease in Waterford in 2013.

The Pumped Schools’ Video Awards, supported by Bayer in partnership with the Irish Heart Foundation, the Federation of Irish Sport and RTÉ news2day, have been launched to encourage young people to create mini-movies on a heart health theme.

The competition invites participants to unleash their creative juices and explore the science behind physical activity, diet and smoking, the impact of these on health and well-being, and produce compelling 90-second videos that inspire viewers to act. With a prize fund of €10,000, there are three categories in which to enter – “Smoking Stinks”, “Active Teens – Healthy Hearts” and “Weighty Matters”. The awards are open to all post-primary students between the ages of 12 and 16 years with the winner of each category winning €3,000 for their school’s sports department and each individual student receiving a €100 voucher. More information can be found at www.pumped.ie

Rosarie Kealy, Sports Co-ordinator, Waterford Sports Partnership is encouraging post-primary schools and students from across County Waterford to take part: “The Pumped Schools’ Video Awards provide a great opportunity for schools and teachers to bring out their students’ artistic streak and to focus on the topic of the science behind what makes our hearts tick and the importance of getting active and eating a healthy diet. With fantastic prizes on offer, and a vital learning experience that every student should have, I would strongly encourage schools and students to consider taking part. Not only will it hopefully have a lasting impact in terms of our attitude to what we eat and drink, whether we smoke, and the importance of being active, but there is also the prospect of a very immediate and exciting cash outcome for schools’ sports departments and students’ pockets too!”

It is estimated that one in five teenagers is overweight or obese with Ireland’s rates amongst the worst in Europe. Our young people also top an international league in terms of levels of inactivity, a major risk for overweight, obesity, cardiovascular and other diseases. The league, part of an analysis of 15 countries worldwide presented at a Global Summit on Physical Activity of Children in Toronto earlier this year, accorded Ireland a Grade D minus for physical activity amongst children, behind countries such as Mozambique, New Zealand, Mexico, Kenya and Nigeria. Only 12 per cent of post-primary students meet the Department of Health’s guideline of 60 minutes’ moderate to vigorous physical activity each day—girls less so than boys—and just 10 per cent of post-primary students are timetabled with the recommended minimum 120 minutes of physical education each week.
Sarah O’Connor is Chief Executive of the Federation of Irish Sport and a member of the Healthy Ireland Council that seeks to mobilise communities, families and individuals with the aim of supporting everyone to enjoy the best possible health and well-being. “It is hard to understand against a backdrop of growing levels of obesity and physical inactivity, and the vision of Healthy Ireland—where everyone can enjoy physical and mental health and well-being to their full potential—that according to available research that only 10 per cent of post-primary students are receiving the recommendation of 120 minutes of PE every week. We also know that girls are less likely than boys to meet the physical activity recommendations for health of at least 60 minutes each day, that they receive fewer minutes of formal PE in school and that they are more likely than boys to be timetabled for single as opposed to double class periods. Schools along with parents have a key role to play in ensuring that young people meet the physical activity levels needed for health. It is vital that we take this issue seriously and we join with our partners in the Irish Heart Foundation in urging that all schools deliver on this and that all students participate.”
Maureen Mulvihill, Head of Health Promotion, Irish Heart Foundation said: “PE is an intrinsic element in encouraging young people to be physically active. Given the high levels of inactivity in teenagers, increasing levels of overweight and obesity and early signs of heart disease, it is vital that the recommended level of PE is compulsory for all pupils, as is the case across Europe for primary and Junior cycle education6. Projects like Pumped are part of the mix to help educate our young people on how to live a healthy lifestyle and prevent disease. Cardiovascular disease, mainly heart attack and stroke, is the leading cause of death in Ireland with about 10,000 people dying each year7.”

The Sean Kelly Tour Youth Challenge – well done!!

Published: September 4, 2014

Waterford Sports Partnership would like to congratulate the thirty nine participants who took part in the Sean Kelly Tour Youth Challenge.
The aim of the Sean Kelly Tour Youth Challenge is to promote and increase cycling among young people through preparation for the 50km Kelly Cruise. The programme, funded by the Irish Sports Council and supported by Dungarvan Cycling Club was offered to 11 to 18 year olds from schools in Dungarvan.

The programme kicked off in June 2014, fourteen training spins were held over the summer months which were all delivered by Dungarvan Cycling Club. At the end of the programme twenty one of the participants took part in the Sean Kelly Tour of Waterford on Sunday 24th August. Waterford Sports Partnership are delighted that a juvenile section has now been established in Dungarvan Cycling Club as a direct result of the programme. Dungarvan Cycling Club held a prize giving night at the end of the programme where the young cyclists were awarded for their participation in the programme and success in the weekly time trials.

One parent commented “my son Darragh did the SKT youth challenge and it was the best run event over all the weeks that you would see. The training in the car park and the safety checks were great. The roads were so well marshalled. He learned so much and we had a great time helping out. The prize giving was a great bonus as well. Looking forward to next year and can’t say enough about the lads from Dungarvan Cycling Club.”

A special thank you to Robert Power from Dungarvan Cycling Club and all of the parents who assisted with marshalling at time trial events.

On Target Archery Programme

Published: September 2, 2014

Waterford Sports Partnership and Na Laoch Dall Archery Club recently hosted a five week Parent/Child Archery Programme.

Under the guidance of fully qualified and experienced coaches, the participants were given an introduction to safety on the range, description of equipment and its components, technique on ‘drawing’ and ‘shooting ‘ the bow, shooting form and mental aspects of shooting.

The skills developed among the parents and the young people over the five weeks was something to be commended. This is a testament to the standard of coaching Na Laoch Dall Archery Club has to offer, more importantly, the coaches made all the participants feel very welcome into their club.

Waterford Sports Partnership would like to congratulate all those who took part, in particular the parents none of whom had ever shot a bow before.

A special thank you to Na Laoch Dall Archery Club for facilitating this excellent programme.

Waterford Street Soccer 2014

Published: August 7, 2014

The 2014 Street Soccer League, a Waterford Sports Partnership & FAI initiative, took place in Williamstown All Weather Pitches, Williamstown throughout the month of July. Teams from Avondale, The Grange, Crystal Court and Cherrymount took part in glorious sunny weather.

Coming into the final night it was still all to play for, with each team still having a chance of winning the league. In the U-12 section ‘The Grange’ took the title for the first time since they entered the competition, producing a dazzling display of team football. In the U-14 section, Avondale remain dominant in this league, showing nerves of steel when it comes to pressure.

Community Garda Mary Murphy was on hand to present the medals to the teams, which were kindly sponsored by An Garda Síochána and the winning teams received their trophies. A great atmosphere surrounded the final night of the event with many parents in attendance.

Waterford Sports Partnership would like to thank Williamstown Sports Complex for hosting the event, Gary Power from the FAI, and in particular the local coaches and volunteers for without them, this event would not be possible.
