Re-engaging Programme

This programme works by means of a referral process. If you are aged between 16yrs and 23yrs and have disengaged from sport and physical activity for whatever reason or you know someone that may fit into that bracket then this is for you.

Over the past few years we have received many referrals from young adults, parents and youth workers enabling the YSDO to make contact with the young people that are hoping to once again or for the first time get involved in a local club to participate in the sport or simply volunteer.

Youth Sports Leader Training

Published: October 1, 2018

THIS PROGRAMME IS FOR STUDENTS from 13 – 18 years old

Waterford Sports Partnership, under the direction of Sport Ireland have been successful in securing Dormant Account Funding to support the delivery of a number of Sport Leader Award programmes within schools, community groups and youth organisations.

The Sports Leadership Award provides the ideal starting point for learners who wish to develop their leadership skills and gain a nationally recognised leader qualification. This programme is designed to equip young people with the motivation and confidence to deliver sporting opportunities to others and general leadership skills that will stand to them throughout their life. This qualification is 29 hours in duration, 18 hours of directed learning and 11 hours of self study (completion of learning log and planning sessions).

This programme benefits the students in many ways:

  • It’s a fun and practical course that focuses on leader rather than technical ability.
  • Potential stepping stone into employment, further education and training.
  • Allows everybody to take a full and active role in sport and physical activity.
  • Increased self confidence that comes through taking responsibility for their own and others learning and enjoyment.
  • Develops generic leadership skills that can be applied to a variety of situations, as well as contributing to the personal development of the learner.

Congratulations to the fifteen members of Waterford Comhairle na nÓg who took part in an Active Leadership Training Session on Friday, delivered by WSP in the Fusion Centre, Dungarvan.
The Leadership session focused on improving the Comhairle members ability to work as a team and deliver enjoyable and safe physical activity sessions. Comhairle member James O’Callaghan said the session was ‘one of the most helpful things I’ve done all year’ and Katie O’Brien said ‘Highly beneficial and will definitely help us to improve our leadership skills.’ Comhairle coordinator Jamie said ‘Comhairle members loved the leadership session that Peter delivered to them today. It will especially help them in their preparations for the upcoming ‘Let’s Go Mental’ event, and longer term for all the public events we organise. It particularly focused on their active leadership and event management skills and I would highly recommend it to other groups.’

Well done guys and we look forward to seeing Comhairle members put the theory into practice for their upcoming events.

BMX Jam in the Park 2015

Published: June 16, 2015

As part of National Bike Week 2015 which is funded by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport; Waterford City Council, in conjunction with Waterford Sports Partnership, held a BMX ‘Jam in the Park’. This event was open to young people of various ages which gave them the opportunity to showcase their skills to a panel of judges. Such was the success of the last years Scooter section that we included it again this year.

A total of 38 young people entered both the Scooter and BMX Jam. The Jam was divided into two categories; Beginner & Advanced. Each rider performed in groups of three, for three minutes. Prizes were awarded for most skillful trick, best attempted trick & most stylist trick. The judges were astounded by the high level of skill the young local boys exhibited. A big thank you to Liam from Spokes Cycles who ran the event very efficiently and thanks also to the Civil Defence and Community Gardai, who ensured the event ran in a safe, enjoyable manner.

Roll on the ‘Jam’ in 2016!

Waterford Teams compete in Irish Street Soccer League Finals

Published: May 22, 2015

Ten players (2 teams) represented Waterford in the Irish Street Soccer League Finals that took place recently in Dublin.
Since early February, the lads got together every Friday afternoon in Ozier Park to prepare for this tournament through rain, hail or sunshine. Twenty four teams from all over Ireland took part, the Minster for Youth & Children Affairs, James Reilly and FAI CEO, John Delaney were amongst those in attendance. By all accounts, both Waterford teams gave a very good performance, with one team reaching the semi-final. Congratulations to Adam Caulfield who took home the Waterford ‘Player of the Year’ Award. Both Adam and Dale Sheridan received a call up for trials to represent Ireland in the World Cup Street League, which takes place in Chile in October.

Special thanks to TREO’s project worker, Danny Murphy for motivating and encouraging the lads each week, Terence O’Neill, Manager of McGuire House and to Villa Football Club for the use of their facilities
