The Sean Kelly Tour Youth Challenge kicked off last Tuesday night with twenty-five young people attending the first training spin, which met at the Friary in Dungarvan at 6:30pm. The group will attend six of these training spins leading up to the goal of completing the 50km Kelly Cruise on August 25th. The group were led through a warm-up consisting of hand signalling and road positioning drills and then split into two groups depending on their cycling experience. The first group followed a loop out and back to Clonea Beach, while the other group cycled out towards Stradbally.
Before heading off, participants were given pointers on cycling safety and technique. Along the route, participants practiced these skills, including; checking for traffic/pedestrians before moving off, cycling in pairs and single file, hand signalling, pedal positioning and weight distribution on bends, positioning for cycling roundabouts and T-junctions and communicating to alert the group to potential hazards. The cycle and the evening sunshine were thoroughly enjoyed by all and the group are well on their way to conquering the 50km on August 25th!
There is still time to join the Youth Challenge!
