NEW! Older Adult Home Exercise Plan

Published: October 1, 2020

Waterford Sports Partnership (WSP) is one of 29 Local Sports Partnerships in the country who have come together to roll-out a 4-week physical activity plan for older adults as part of Positive Aging Week.

The resource has been developed by Sport Ireland and a working group of LSP Community Sport Development Officers in conjunction with Age & Opportunity. The resource will support people to try and reach the minimum of 30 minutes of daily physical activity, as recommended in Ireland’s National Physical Activity Plan. It will help an individual’s strength and confidence in their body, which will support them to be more physically active as well as developing transferable skills for everyday life.

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, Waterford Sports Partnership has been working hard to ensure the people of Waterford remain physically active.

As part of a national network of 29 Local Sports Partnerships (LSP) WSP has adapted by using online resources, printed booklets and other innovative means, to ensure that everyone in their community has the opportunity to share in the enjoyment as well as the mental and physical health benefits of sport and physical activity.

John Treacy, Chief Executive Sport Ireland, “This International Day of Older Persons, Sport Ireland are delighted to be launching the Older Adult Home Exercise Plan with the support of the Network of Local Sports Partnerships and Age & Opportunity. By building these exercises in to your daily routine and tracking your progress over the few weeks, you will notice a huge improvement in your physical and mental well- being, and we need that more than ever right now”

Rosarie Kealy, Sports Co-ordinator, Waterford Sports Partnership, said ‘We welcome this really useful and practical resource which will support older adults in reaching their daily target of 30 minutes physical activity.  The resource was developed by Development Officers across the Local Sports Partnership network and therefore brings with it a real understanding of the specific needs and how best to support older adults in being more active.  Physical activity is more important now than ever for the physical and mental health of everyone.’

This resource is fully adaptive for people of all abilities and ages. There is an activity planner included to help your track your progress throughout the 4-weeks. Simply print out the resource or display it on your phone and be active!

Return to Sport and Physical Activity – Older Adults

Published: July 29, 2020

As a result of COVID-19, there are significant barriers to the resumption of physical activity for older people. This is linked to increased anxiety, nervousness, loss of confidence, feelings of exclusion, weakening of physical activity related social contact and physical deconditioning.

We all want to see older people come back to sport and physical activity and we hope the following guidance will help inform, encourage, build confidence and in particular reassure older people as they return to a more active lifestyle, in accordance with the public health guidelines and the recommendations of their own sporting body or organisation.

  • Consider DATE (distance, activity, time, environment)
  • Limit the number of participants
  • Limit the duration of the activity
  • Consider the contact (proximity, direct touch, equipment sharing) and minimise where possible
  • Train outdoors
  • Consider the use of PPE assisting the individuals who may need extra support or care when transferring to or from their wheelchair, changing clothing, using equipment etc.
  • Connect with older people to outline the changes that have been implemented. This may help alleviate any feelings of worry or anxiety that participants may be feeling on their return to sport.

This guidance was prepared with the support of Age & Opportunity, who conducted extensive consultation within their sector.

Age & Opportunity, have produced sector specific information on the return to sport and physical activity – Visit the Age & Opportunity website
