Go For Life Grants 2018 – OPEN FOR APPLICATIONS!

Published: August 29, 2018

The Go for Life Grant Scheme for 2018 is now open for applications. The deadline for return of grant application forms is 12 noon, Friday 28th September.

Who can apply?
Grants are available to all eligible local clubs, groups and organisations that promote increased participation in recreational sport or physical activity for older people as a main element of their activities. Commercial, statutory or umbrella bodies, or their agents, are not eligible for funding under this grant scheme. An exception to this are Local Sports Partnerships who are eligible to apply. Day centres completely funded and directed by statutory bodies, such as the HSE, are not eligible.
Grants are made available for sport or physical activity for older people and the overall membership of applicants must be such that older people will be the beneficiaries of the grant monies. Funding for sports clubs will not be considered unless the application specifically relates to older people. Only one application per group will be considered.

Trishaw

Published: July 24, 2018

‘Saoirse’ is the name of our Trishaw and this name symbolises the freedom that users of our Trishaw can enjoy. It communicates a positive message of Health & Activity for All.  It increases accessibility to the Waterford Greenway particularly for older adults and ultimately will have a positive impact on attitudes of the wider community to accessibility, inclusion and health for all.

Older adults and people with limited mobility now have the opportunity  to  be driven around in a comfortable ‘couch on wheels’, at an easy pace, taking in the sights and sounds of nature on the Waterford Greenway, whatever the weather. As Cycling Without Age, who introduced this marvellous idea to Ireland, say  ‘everyone is entitled to feel the wind in their hair’!

The Trishaw which was funded by Healthy Ireland, is a partnership between Healthy Waterford (a subcommittee of Waterford LCDC), Waterford City & County Council, Waterford Sports Partnership and Deise Day Centre. This Trishaw is managed by Deise Day Centre and members will be ‘piloted’ by trained volunteers. There are now 13 Trishaw bikes across Ireland with more on order, taking older adults out on free spins.

If you are interested in volunteering your time to pilot the Trishaw, please contact Deise Day Centre on 058 44556. To access the bike currently, you must be a member of Deise Day Centre. We hope that this will be the first of many Trishaws in County Waterford.
