Saturday 19th to Sunday 27th September 2020
National Bike Week was launched in 2009 to raise the profile of cycling as a healthy and fun mode of transport and physical activity. The initiative was developed by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport and continues to grow each year. Bike Week is organised locally by Local Authorities, Local Sports Partnerships, Community Groups, Clubs, Schools and other interested cycling stakeholders. Bike Week is a celebration and promotion of all that’s great about bikes and cycling. Held over an extended week each year, with bike themed events organised by local authorities, community groups and cycling groups throughout Ireland.
Cycling is fun and anyone of any age can ride a bike; it’s a perfect chance to spend quality time with family outdoors and is a very flexible form of exercise. Cycling has seen a huge increase during lockdowns imposed on Irish communities with 510,000 people recorded as cycling once a week in May of this year, Bike Week aims to continue this trend.
Due to the impact of COVID-19, Bike Week 2020 has been rescheduled from its original June date and is now taking place from Saturday 19th to Sunday 27th September. Waterford Sports Partnership in partnership with Waterford City & County Council and An Taisce Green Schools will again coordinate Bike Week for the people of Waterford.
