Remember: it is your responsibility to assess the route, terrain and weather conditions before setting out, particularly if you are heading out into the uplands.  Trail conditions can change due to weather.

Getting Started & Safety Information
If you’re new to walking, Get Ireland Walking offers helpful advice to get you started safely and confidently.  Their guidance covers choosing comfortable, supportive footwear, building up distance gradually, understanding trail grading so you know what to expect, and tips for walking safely on rural roads. Join a Walking Group
There are many community walking groups across Waterford.

Community Walk Leader Training
The Get Ireland Walking Community Walking Programme supports community members and volunteers to lead local walks. It provides training, resources, and guidance on planning safe, inclusive, and enjoyable walks, including route selection, group management, and risk awareness.  Registered walk leaders receive free insurance and ongoing support to help walking groups grow and thrive.

HIKING

Getting Started & Safety Information
If you’re new to hiking in Ireland, Mountaineering Ireland recommends being well-prepared and aware of the conditions.  Learn basic navigation skills and always carry a map and compass, as mountain weather can change rapidly.  Wear sturdy boots and suitable clothing to stay safe and comfortable.  Good preparation ensures your walks are enjoyable and safe.

Join a Hiking Group
Waterford has a welcoming community of hiking clubs where people of all abilities can get outdoors, stay active, and meet fellow walkers. Mountaineering Ireland has a list of affiliated clubs – check them out HERE

Mountain Skills Training
Mountaineering Ireland offers practical courses designed to build core hillwalking skills, ideal for beginners or anyone wanting to feel more confident in the hills.

Mountain skills training covers things like map reading, contour interpretation, basic navigation, understanding mountain hazards and weather, essential equipment, and route planning.

REC 3 First Aid
REC 3 First Aid courses provide essential training for anyone enjoying the outdoors. These courses cover practical skills to respond to injuries and emergencies in remote or challenging environments, from cuts and fractures to hypothermia and allergic reactions.  For walkers, hikers, and outdoor leaders, having REC 3 first aid knowledge ensures you can act confidently and safely, helping yourself and others when accidents happen far from immediate medical help.
