Waterford offers a fantastic range of opportunities for outdoor running, from accessible greenways and park trails to scenic coastal routes, forest tracks and mountain paths. Whether you’re taking your first steps into running or training for your next event, there’s a route to suit every age, ability and ambition.

This guide highlights places to run in Waterford, along with information on getting started safely, joining local clubs, exploring trail running and taking part in community events such as parkrun.

Locations
Whether you enjoy the tranquillity of forest trails, the scenic views of coastal paths, the convenience of urban routes, or the accessibility of greenways, Waterford offers a wide range of places to run. The trails and routes below showcase some of the county’s best locations, catering for beginners, recreational runners and those training for longer distances.

Getting Started & Safety Information
If you’re new to running, start with a combination of walking and jogging, gradually increasing your distance and pace. Set realistic goals and focus on building consistency.

Before you head out:

  • Wear suitable running shoes.
  • Warm up before your run and stretch afterwards.
  • Stay hydrated and dress for the weather.
  • Carry a mobile phone and let someone know your route if running alone.

Trail & Mountain Running
Waterford’s forests, the Comeragh Mountains and the Knockmealdown Mountains offer excellent opportunities for trail and mountain running.

Before heading off-road:

  • Choose a route that matches your ability.
  • Wear appropriate footwear and carry water, suitable clothing and a fully charged mobile phone.
  • Check the weather, tell someone your plans and follow the principles of Leave No Trace.

parkrun

parkrun is a free, weekly, timed 5 km event open to walkers, joggers and runners of all abilities.  It’s a welcoming way to stay active, meet others and enjoy running outdoors.
