In 2023, Waterford Sports Partnership (WSP) was selected as one of six counties to pilot the Physical Activity for Health Programme, supported by funding from Sláintecare through Sport Ireland. Along with Waterford, Mayo, Longford, Limerick, Wexford, and Wicklow were also chosen to roll out the programme across Local Sports Partnerships (LSPs) nationwide.
The Physical Activity for Health Officer (PAfH Officer) plays a pivotal role in engaging people with chronic conditions in physical activity, focusing on those who may need extra support before joining existing WSP programmes. Working closely with key partners, the PAfH Officer ensures that individuals receive the attention and care needed to safely participate in local physical activity programmes. Over time, the goal is for participants to transition into mainstream WSP offerings as they build confidence and readiness.
The PAfH Officer is a member of the WSP team and collaborates with Sport Ireland, the other pilot LSPs, Sláintecare, the HSE, local authorities, and other stakeholders to provide tailored opportunities for people with chronic conditions to get active.
