International Men’s Health Week ran from Monday 15th to Sunday 21st June and is celebrated in many European countries. The theme of 2020 is “Restoring the Balance: Be Part of the Solution”.
Celebrated internationally, the overall aims of MHW are to:
• Heighten awareness of preventable health problems for males of all ages.
• Support men & boys to engage in healthier lifestyle choices / activities.
• Encourage early detection & treatment of health difficulties in males.
Waterford Sports Partnership coordinated four events during the week with two of them specifically available for people within the West Waterford triangle.
On Monday 15th June our online Fighting Fit Programme commenced and we were delighted with buy in from men in West Waterford. This six week programme gives participants a weekly 30 minute video delivered by Irish national coach Killian Walsh from Dungarvan Boxing Club. Sessions include warm up, skipping tuition, progressive boxing techniques, shadow boxing and core strength.
We also delivered socially distanced Men on the Move sessions in three locations and on Wednesday 17th June we worked in conjunction with Cappoquin Railway AFC. WSP tutor Shauna Walsh delivered three thirty minute sessions to a total of 17 men in groups of no more than 6 with the sessions covering warm-up, aerobic exercises, core strength & cool down.
Well done to all the men that took part and thank you to Cappoquin Railway AFC. We were delighted with the buy-in from the men of West Waterford as we aimed to ‘restore the balance’ for Irish men.
Here are a few highlights of the week, keep an eye out for some follow on activities.
