Learning to Cycle as an Adult
It’s never too late to learn to cycle. Many adults are learning to cycle for the first time or returning to cycling after many years away from the saddle. Learning at your own pace is the key to building confidence.
Helpful tips include:
- Start in a quiet, traffic-free location.
- Practise balancing before worrying about speed.
- Learn to brake and steer confidently before cycling on roads.
- Keep sessions short and enjoyable.
- Ride with an experienced friend or join a beginner programme.
- Gradually increase the distance of your rides as your confidence grows.
Remember—every experienced cyclist started as a beginner.
Fairlane Park Cycling Facilities | Dungarvan
Fairlane Park in Dungarvan is home to one of Ireland’s leading community cycling facilities. At its heart is Ireland’s first outdoor Learn to Cycle Track – a traffic-free, purpose-built circuit with road markings, signs and pedestrian crossings where children and beginners can safely develop cycling skills before progressing to the nearby Waterford Greenway.
The wider park also includes a BMX pump track with beginner and advanced loops, alongside a skatepark and other recreational facilities, making it a hub for cycling, wheeled sports and active recreation for all ages and abilities.
The facility provides an excellent stepping stone between learning to ride and cycling on public roads.
Cycling Safety
Cycling is a safe and enjoyable activity when appropriate precautions are taken.
Before every ride remember to:
