FAI Community Night League Waterford launched

Published: February 26, 2014

On Tuesday 25th February the FAI Community Night League Waterford was launched for 13-15 year olds right across the Waterford region. This unique concept was originally launched in Dublin and has proved to be a huge success in the Inner City areas of the capital.
Community football initiative’s are extremely important to the Football Association of Ireland as they provide kids with an opportunity to take part in the beautiful game within their own environments. To date across Waterford we have had great success with previous community projects such as our Street Soccer League and Late night league for 18-21 year olds, and community camps.

Invitations have been sent to all the Community Youth Projects and Garda Youth Diversion Projects that come under the umbrella of the Waterford and South Tipperary Community Youth Service and we hope to get a great response to the league which will commence on Tuesday 18th March and run for five weeks after that in Kingfisher Sports Complex.

Gary Power: FAI Development Officer Waterford City, said ‘we are delighted to launch our new FAI Community Night League Waterford today. A big part of role is to ensure that we provide opportunities for kids that maybe are not already members of clubs to take part in football. The Waterford and South Tipperary Community Youth Service projects and Garda youth diversion projects do a tremendous job in keeping kids of this age group healthy and active and we are delighted to be able to provide them with this service. Our FAI Project Futsal students will be of great help to us in running this programme and we will also be linking in with Brian O’Neill Youth Sports Development Officer of Waterford Sports Partnership for his help and assistance and An Gardai Siochana whoa re always a great support to us in our community football programmes I am delighted to have Waterford United on board once again as a supporter of our community football projects and they will be providing access to the kids that take part to come to Waterford United games and will also have players and management present at the league which is fantastic for all the young kids’.

Tommy Griffin, Waterford United First Team Manager, said ‘after the great success of our joint community football camp we are delighted to once again become involved in such a fantastic project that can have a great affect on the lives of young kids. Getting Waterford United FC active in our community can only be of great benefit to our club going forward and I am really looking forward to what should be a really exciting project for the young players involved.
