Waterford is one of Ireland’s premier cycling destinations, offering an exceptional variety of routes for every type of cyclist. From safe, traffic-free Greenways perfect for beginners and families to challenging mountain climbs, scenic coastal roads and internationally recognised touring routes, there is something to suit every age, ability and ambition.

Waterford has a number of safe and enjoyable cycling locations that are ideal for families, children and anyone beginning their cycling journey.
The Waterford Greenway
The Waterford Greenway is Ireland’s flagship Greenway and one of the country’s most popular cycling destinations.
Stretching 46km between Waterford City and Dungarvan, the Greenway follows the route of the former railway line through spectacular countryside, passing historic viaducts, the impressive Ballyvoile Tunnel and stunning views of the Comeragh Mountains.
Suitable for: Families, Leisure cyclists, Beginners, E-bike users

Anne Valley Walk: A peaceful riverside route with shared pathways suitable for relaxed family cycling. Perfect for young cyclists developing confidence away from busy roads.
Bilberry Greenway Connection: A popular traffic-free route connecting communities within Waterford City and providing safe access for leisure cycling and commuting.
Kilbarry Greenway: A shared-use Greenway linking residential areas with schools, parks and local amenities, making it ideal for family cycling and everyday journeys.
Walton Park | Abbeyside | Dungarvan: A safe, open space, suitable for children developing their cycling skills before progressing onto longer routes.
The People’s Park | Waterford City: The Park boats large open spaces and quiet internal paths. Ideal for children using balance bikes or taking their first pedal strokes.
Waterford Nature Park | Kilbarry: Wide, smooth paths with very little traffic. A good option for practising balance, steering and stopping before moving onto busier cycleways.

These are challenging routes designed with the experienced cyclist in mind. Taking cyclists due east of Dungarvan, along the Waterford Greenway to Kilmacthomas and then onwards towards Comeragh Mountains, these routes have it all.

The Kelly Coastal Route | 76k | Challenging
This route offers cyclists amazing coastal vistas as it takes the old railway line, passes through the village of Stradbally (gateway to the Copper Coast UNESCO Geo Park and winner of Tidy Towns and Entente Florale competitions), Bunmahon (19th century centre for copper mining), Kilmurrin Cove, Dunabrattin Head and the village of Annestown, Newtown Cove near The Metal Man, the family seaside resort of Tramore with its dunes and Back Strand, the beautiful fishing village of Dunmore East and finally the charming ferry village of Passage East, all offering splendid sea views.

Kelly Heritage Route | 107k | Challenging
This route brings you through some of the most scenic and historic parts of the county. It includes the delightful village of Villierstown, the wonderful scenery of the Dromana Drive, superb views of the River Blackwater, a Hindu-Gothic gate lodge, Cappoquin, the historic heritage town of Lismore, Camphire Bridge, Knockamore, Glendine and Ardmore with its stunning 12th century Round Tower and Cathedral. It also passes through the county’s Gaeltacht or Irish speaking area of an Rinn and Old Parish. Towards the end Helvick Head, just off the route, is well worth a visit.

Waterford EuroVelo Route
EuroVelo routes are a network of long-distance cycling routes that connect countries across Europe. Developed by the European Cyclists’ Federation, the network is designed for leisure cyclists, commuters and cycle tourists. Following Europe’s mighty western border, reaching from Scandinavia, to South and Western Portugal, totalling 11,000 km. Waterford’s gently rolling, coastal roads and Waterford Greenway play host to EuroVelo 1 for just over 130kms.
